- festival of learning
with climate change hotspots - March-April 2025, Kolkata
The tramjatra friendship between Kolkata and Naarm/Melbourne
has celebrated low carbon, clean air urban transport for three decades.
Sundarban Tramjatra
will celebrate the entangled relationships between
the largest mangrove system on earth, the Sundarbans,
and its neighbouring megacity Kolkata.
Both environments are under increasing social and economic pressures, and are showing signs of their extreme vulnerability to climate change.
Challenges lie ahead.
Citizens of earth need
inspiration to self-empower,
knowledge to seek justice,
courage to bear witness,
creative resourcefulness to adapt,
and compassion to care for biodiversity.
Sundarban Tramjatra
offers a platform for learning and moving together towards hopeful futures, through a festival of public events carried by tramways.
tramjatra has gained momentum over three decades through decorated trams
on the streets promoting biodiversity and sustainability in both cities,
tram conductors warming the curious human spirit, public forums,
artworks and performances, numerous films (Kather Baxo, Tramjatra 2017),
a book, patua songs, a daily newspaper column, a change of
Kolkata tram conductors uniforms for a day … much media discussion and more.
A creative, public conversational approach has evolved tramjatra into an open civic platform for the exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences that inspire communities into informed proactive social movements.
